May 10, 2021 – El Paso County has initiated a project to improve traffic management and safety at the intersection of Fountain Mesa Road and Caballero/Fortman Avenue. The recommended new intersection is a single-lane roundabout design which includes pedestrian crossing areas, drainage, lighting and restriping of Fountain Mesa Road north of the intersection to Fontaine Boulevard to one lane in each direction with a center left-turn lane and outside shoulders.

“Increased traffic in the vicinity and projected growth has resulted in the need for a new traffic management solution that is more efficient and safer for both the travelling public and pedestrians. This project has been in the El Paso County plans for many years. Traffic studies and analysis of traffic accident history within the corridor also support the need for the intersection improvements,” said Jennifer Irvine, El Paso County Engineer. “The project is intended to make the route safer for the traveling public, reduce risk for local residents, improve flow through the area, reduce crashes and improve pedestrian safety.”

The public is invited to learn about the project and provide public input.
