Types of Leave
HFWA
Healthy Families and Workplaces Act
The Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA) provides employees with paid sick leave to care for their own health needs or those of a family member. Leave may also be used for public health emergencies or safety-related needs. HFWA helps ensure employees can take time off when needed while maintaining job protection.
FMLA
Family Medical Leave Act
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for certain family and medical reasons. This may include caring for a serious health condition, welcoming a new child, or supporting a family member. FMLA helps employees balance work and personal responsibilities while maintaining job security.
RTW/ MD
Return to Work/ Modified Duty
EPC supports employees in their return to work following an illness or injury and will work with employees and their healthcare providers to facilitate a safe and timely transition back to the workplace. This may include modified duty, when possible. Eligibility for modified duty is based on the availability of appropriate modified duty at the time of the request.
Military Leave
Military leave allows employees to take time away from work to fulfill military service obligations, including training or active duty. The County supports employees in meeting these responsibilities and provides job protections and benefits in accordance with federal and state law.
Personal Leave
Personal leave allows employees to take time off for personal needs that may not be covered by other leave types. This may include handling personal matters, appointments, or unexpected situations. Personal leave provides flexibility while supporting employees in maintaining a healthy work-life balance (i.e., Vacation, Personal Holiday, Voting, Jury Duty, Domestic Abuse).
Bereavement Leave
El Paso County allows eligible employees to take time off following the loss of a family member or loved one. This leave provides time to grieve, make arrangements, and attend services, helping employees manage personal loss while maintaining job protection in accordance with applicable policies.
Accommodations
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) An employee who has a disability, physical, or mental limitations that substantially limit the employee’s ability to perform the essential job functions should report those circumstances to the HR Department. The HR Department encourages all employees to engage in an interactive process to explore accommodations for an individual who has a disability or the above-described limitations.
Benefits & Pay
Benefits and Pay include the compensation and support employees receive as part of their employment. This typically covers salary or wages, health and wellness benefits, retirement plans, paid leave, and other programs that support financial security and work-life balance.
Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)
Colorado’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program provides eligible employees with paid leave for certain life events, such as their own serious health condition, caring for a family member, bonding with a new child, or addressing needs related to military deployment. FAMLI helps employees take time away from work while still receiving a portion of their income.
Short Term Disability (STD) Policy
Short-term disability provides temporary income replacement for employees who are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or medical condition. This benefit helps support employees during recovery by offering partial pay for a defined period of time after meeting the elimination period.
Long Term Disability (LTD) Policy
Long-term disability provides income replacement for employees who are unable to work for an extended period due to a serious illness or injury, providing partial income after meeting the elimination period.
