Sustaining the American Dream

Owning a home has always been a key piece of the American Dream, and it is the number one way that families build wealth in our country. Emergency repairs and barrier removal can sometimes cost too much for seniors and hardworking, low-income families. El Paso County Economic Development has partnered with Brothers Redevelopment, a non-profit agency based out of Denver, to provide qualified residents of the County with a Housing Rehab program.

Grant funding through this program helps to remove obstacles for persons with disabilities and add health and safety upgrades to the home. Some examples include building ramps to the front door for walker/wheelchair access, adding grab bars in showers, removing trip hazards from floors, replacing leaking showers, fixing broken windows, and fixing leaky roof gutters. This program does not fund decorative improvements, such as repainting the exterior of a home or landscaping.

The Single-Family Housing Rehab Program is funded through the El Paso County Community Development Block Grant funds, and grant amounts are different every year. Funds run out very quickly based on growing need. This grant is only available to home owners who have incomes under 80% of the area median income as shown here:
